Costello’s Hat Trick Powers Regis to 5–3 Win Over UMaine-Farmington

WESTON, Mass. – Ava Costello's (North Easton, Mass.) hat trick powered the Regis College field hockey team past UMaine-Farmington, 5–3, on Thursday night, lifting the Pride to a 2–3 record on the season.

Costello delivered a standout performance, recording three goals and an assist to lead the way for Regis. Gabrielle Tolman (Rockland, Maine) added two assists, while Anna Miele-DeFelice (Framingham, Mass.) and Izzy Cochrane (Hooksett, N.H.) also found the back of the cage. In goal, Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) earned the win with three saves over 30 minutes of action.

For the Beavers, Bayley Casavant registered a goal and an assist, with Zoey Pennell and Mikayla Wilcox adding a goal apiece. Ella Grant made six saves in goal for UMaine-Farmington.

How it Happened

Miele-Defelice opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, cleaning up a loose ball in the circle and slipping it past Grant for a 1–0 lead. Farmington responded quickly, capitalizing on a penalty corner to level the game, before Costello finished a pass from Tolman to give the Pride a 2–1 edge heading into the second quarter.

The second frame belonged to the Beavers, as Wilcox tied the game in the 23rd minute. Just three minutes later, another quick strike gave them a 3–2 lead, which held through halftime.

Regis controlled the early stages of the third quarter, earning four penalty corners but failing to convert. Later, the Beavers' goalkeeper stood tall, turning away two quality chances but with under a minute remaining in the frame, Cochrane broke through to level the score at 3–3.

Costello took command in the final quarter. She scored the go-ahead goal in the 49th minute off a clever slip pass from Tolman, then struck again three minutes later with a laser to the left corner, sealing the 5–3 victory for the Pride.
