Monks Defeat Pride in GNAC Action

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team welcomed Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Saint Joseph's College of Maine to Regis Stadium this afternoon for a league matchup. The Monks scored twice in each quarter on their way to an 8-1 victory over the Pride.

Ava Costello (North Easton, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Pride off an assist from Hailey Ducharme (Millville, Mass.). In goal, Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) tallied 16 saves in the effort.

For Saint Joseph's, Maya Waryas and Kienna Haley powered the offense with three goals each, with Waryas also contributing an assist. Kimberly McLaughlin earned the win in goal for the Monks.

How It Happened:

The Monks opened the scoring seven minutes into the contest when Ava Markham converted a penalty stroke, placing the ball into the left corner for the 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Waryas finished off a penalty corner to double the advantage, giving Saint Joseph's a 2-0 edge after the first quarter.

Saint Joseph's struck early in the second before Regis responded on a penalty corner. Ducharme corralled the ball and found Costello, who fired it into the left corner to cut the deficit to 3-1 with seven minutes left in the half. Waryas completed her hat trick before the break to push the Monks' lead to 4-1 at halftime.

Haley took over after the break, scoring in the 34th, 44th, and 45th minutes to put the game out of reach. Saint Joseph's added one more tally in the fourth quarter to seal the 8-1 win.
