Pride Soar Past Seahawks in Straight Sets
WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's volleyball team hosted non-conference opponent Salve Regina University at Higgins Court on Wednesday night, where the Pride needed only three sets to secure the victory and even their record at 5-5 on the season.
Avery Mola (Cheshire, Conn.) and Eva Catalanotto (Cheshire, Conn.) led the way for the Pride with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, with Mola also adding three blocks. Alexandra Rivera (Bristol, Conn.) continued to set the tone offensively, dishing out 32 assists, while Gwen Arnold (West Hartford, Conn.) anchored the defense with 10 digs. Grace Fabiano (Greenland, N.H.) joined Mola at the net with three blocks in the win.
For the Seahawks, Lauren Hoyle paced the attack with 12 kills, while Kalena Stavish handed out 15 assists. Defensively, Lydia Daskalos posted a game-high four blocks in the effort.
How it Happened
Five unanswered points helped the Pride grab an early lead before a pair of Mola aces and a kill forced Salve to call a timeout with Regis up 16-10. The break worked in the Seahawks' favor as they rallied to make it a one-point game, prompting a Regis timeout. The Pride responded out of the huddle with three straight kills from Mola, Paulo, and Catalanotto to push the lead back to 20-16. Salve refused to go away, though, tying the set at 23 before a Mola kill and a Salve error sealed the 25-23 first-set victory for Regis.
In the second set, a 7-0 run sparked by a Catalanotto kill and three more from Mola built an 11-7 lead and forced Salve to call its first timeout. The Seahawks would burn their second timeout shortly after a Mola-Fabiano block extended the Pride's advantage to 16-9. Salve responded with a 5-0 run led by three kills from Lauren Hoyle to cut the deficit to 18-15, but the Pride held firm. A Catalanotto kill followed by another Fabiano block fueled three straight points as Regis closed out the set 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set opened with traded points before the Pride rattled off six straight, capped by another Mola kill, for a 12-7 advantage. Salve called a timeout and managed to pull within two at 16-14 after a pair of Pride errors, but that was as close as they would get. Regis closed the set with six unanswered points to win 25-15 and complete the match sweep.
