Scanlon Sparks Pride’s 2-1 Victory Against Fitchburg State
WESTON, Mass. — Delaney Scanlon (Dracut, Mass.) powered the Pride to a 2-1 victory over non-conference opponent Fitchburg State University at Regis Stadium on Tuesday night, tallying both a goal and an assist in the win.
Alongside Scanlon, Julia Benvegnu (Watertown, Conn.) rounded out the scoring with a goal of her own while Alison Jerram (Waltham, Mass.) made four saves in net in the victory.
For the Falcons, Adrianna Westcott scored their lone goal off an assist from Autumn Dwyer.
How it Happened
The Pride wasted no time getting on the board, as just three minutes into the match, Scanlon earned a penalty after being fouled in the box and calmly placed the ball in the top left corner to give her squad a 1-0 lead. The Falcons responded thirteen minutes later, capitalizing on some chaos in the box to sneak one past Jerram and level the score at 1-1. Benvegnu tried to reclaim the advantage at the midway point, dancing through the Falcons' defense, but the opposing keeper made a diving save to keep the game tied, a scoreline that held through halftime.
Maeve Glavin (Norwood, Mass.) had a good look early in the second half with a powerful shot, but it was placed right at the keeper, keeping the Falcons out of danger. However, in the 30th minute, Scanlon delivered a precise cross into the box, where Benvegnu finished it with a one-touch strike past the keeper to restore the Pride's one-goal lead. The Falcons pressed for the remainder of the game, with most of the action taking place in their offensive third, but the Pride's defense stood firm. Jerum made three crucial saves to solidify the 2-1 victory over the Falcons.
