Men’s Soccer Loses at Norwich
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Regis College was able to come from behind once, but Norwich University scored in the second half and then held on for a 2-1 victory Friday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Sabine Field.
In the first half, the majority of the action seemed to take place in the midfield until Norwich took control and drew a corner kick. During the set play, a foul was called on Regis within the box creating a penalty kick situation, and Norwich's Cullen Swett converted the opportunity in the 30th minute to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.
Although they held possession as much as Norwich, the Pride were not credited with a shot until their own corner kick opportunity in the 38th minute. On the corner kick, Michael Arguelles (Miami, Fla.) connected with Cade Bretton (Burlington, Vt.) who sent a header into the back of the net for his first goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1, where it would remain heading into halftime.
Norwich (1-4, 1-3 GNAC) took the lead for good in the 59th minute as Swett scored his second goal of the match off assists by Kam Jorgenson and Jeremy Pless. The Pride's best chance to tie the match came in the 81st minute as Bretton sent another header towards net, but this time it sailed right into the arms of Cadet keeper Nicolas Lanza.
Caleb Russo (Brookfield, N.H.) played the entire match in net for the Pride and was credited with four saves. Lanza finished with two saves as he picked up his first victory of the season.
Regis College (2-4-1, 2-3 GNAC) heads to New London, Conn., to face Mitchell College Wednesday, Sept. 25, starting at 4:30 p.m. The Pride will then host University of Saint Joseph as part of Regis Fest next Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 4 p.m.
