Corsairs Use Late Goal to Sneak Past Pride, 2-1

WESTON, Mass. — The Regis College field hockey team closed out its home slate on Tuesday evening, hosting the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at Regis Stadium, where a late penalty stroke lifted the Corsairs to a 2-1 victory over the Pride.

Teal Galligan (Acushnet, Mass.) provided the lone goal for Regis off an assist from Mackenzie O'Shea (Sharon, Mass.), while Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) anchored the defense with eight saves in net.

For the Corsairs, Sophia Bouffard scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke late in regulation, and Olivia Palm added the earlier tally. Shane Cueman finished with seven saves to earn the win in goal for UMass. Dartmouth.

How it Happened

The Pride jumped ahead early as Galligan finished a feed from O'Shea just over three minutes into the opening quarter, giving Regis the quick 1-0 edge. Martone came up big moments later, turning away a pair of Corsair attempts to keep the lead intact heading into the second.

UMass. Dartmouth leveled the score midway through the second quarter when Palm found the back of the cage after a ball slipped through the middle. The Pride threatened to regain the lead in the final seconds of the half with a penalty corner opportunity, but the Corsair defense held strong to send the game into the break tied at one.

The third quarter saw the majority of play in the Regis defensive end, but the Pride defense came up with big stops as the teams remained deadlocked entering the final frame.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Corsairs nearly created a pair of breakaway chances, but Salena Thongsouvanh (Killingly, Conn.) came up with key defensive stops to shut them down. Moments later, Martone made a trio of clutch saves in the 53rd minute to keep the game deadlocked. With 4:43 remaining, UMass. Dartmouth was awarded a penalty stroke, and Bouffard converted with a shot to the left of Martone to give the Corsairs the 2-1 lead. Despite one last push from the Pride, the score would hold, securing the 2-1 win for the Corsairs.
