Late Goal Sends Falcons Past Pride in Home Opener
WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team opened its 2025 season Saturday evening at Regis Stadium by welcoming Fitchburg State University, where the Falcons would use a late goal to steal the 2-1 victory over the Pride.
Mackenzie O'Shea (Sharon, Mass.) scored the Pride's lone goal of the night, while senior goalkeeper Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) recorded 10 saves in the cage, her highest total since her rookie campaign.
For Fitchburg State, Olivia Narkevicius and Samantha Jones provided the scoring, with Sophia Yates adding an assist. Isabella Corcoran earned the win in net with two saves.
How It Happened:
The opening quarter was evenly contested, with both teams trading possessions in the midfield. Fitchburg State earned a pair of early penalty corners, but the Regis defense held firm, clearing away both chances. Anna Miele-Defelice (Framingham, Mass.) would send a shot to goal, but Corcoran kicked it away to keep the game scoreless after 15 minutes.
The Falcons carried the momentum in the second quarter, generating four penalty corners and eight shots. Martone stood tall in net, stopping four attempts, including a diving save in the closing seconds of the half to preserve the 0-0 scoreline at the break.
Fitchburg State finally broke through in the third quarter when Narkevicius converted on a rebound for a 1-0 lead. Regis nearly found the equalizer just minutes later as Izzy Cochrane (Hooksett, N.H.) forced Corcoran into a save to keep the Falcons in front heading into the final frame.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter, O'Shea found the back of the net with a well-placed shot into the right corner, leveling the score at 1-1. The Falcons responded with a surge of pressure, rattling off six shots in the span of a few minutes before Yates set up Jones for the go-ahead goal with under five minutes to play. The Pride earned one last penalty corner in the closing minute and managed to get a shot off, but the Falcons' defense deflected it away to secure the 2-1 result.
