Salem State Rallies to Defeat the Pride, 2-1
WESTON, Mass.-- The Regis College men's soccer team had its home opener this afternoon at Regis Stadium, taking on the Vikings from Salem State. In a back-and-forth game, the Pride would fall just short with a final score of two to one.
Haroun Mafhoum (Bellingham, Mass.) provided the lone goal for the Pride with an upper-frame strike, while goalkeepers Chris Alcon (Cartagena, Spain) and Wylie Gardiner (Cohasset, Mass.) each recorded three saves in the effort.
For Salem State, Jadiel Bomfim registered a goal and an assist, while Iago Luiz De Sousa-Vieira added a goal of his own. Marcelo Silva contributed an assist and made five saves in net to secure the victory.
How it Happened:
The Pride wasted no time in this one when Mafhoum would open up his season account just three minutes into the game when he let one fly, beating the Vikings keeper from a distance.
In the 34th minute goalkeeper Alcon would be called on to pick a shot out of the bottom corner to keep his sheet clean and keep the Pride's 1-0 lead in tact at the break.
During the early stages of the second half, Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.) would look to extend the Pride's lead with an acrobatic bicycle kick but his attempt was stopped by the Vikings netminder.
Salem wouldn't stay quiet as Iago Luiz De Sousa-Vieira would find the back of the net off an assist from Jadiel Bomfim. Moments later, Bomfim struck for a goal of his own to give the Vikings the lead. Those two tallies proved decisive, as Salem State held on for the 2-1 victory.
