Balanced Attack Propels Warriors Past Pride
WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team closed out its two-game home stand Thursday afternoon, falling to Eastern Connecticut State University, 6-2, at Regis Stadium.
Ava Costello (Easton, Mass.) and Anna Miele-DeFelice (Framingham, Mass.) each scored for Regis, while Kailey Araujo (Acushnet, Mass.) and Teal Galligan (Acushnet, Mass.) were credited with assists. In net, Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) made 13 saves in the effort.
For Eastern Connecticut, Audrey Molin led the offense with two goals, while Grace Barlage added a goal and an assist. In net, Veronica McKenna earned the victory, stopping two shots in 30 minutes of action.
How It Happened
The Warriors struck early, as Molin scored twice in the opening minutes to give ECSU a 2-0 lead. Martone turned aside several chances to keep the deficit from growing, while the Pride generated late first-quarter pressure, including two shots from Miele-DeFelice that were denied by McKenna to preserve the advantage.
In the second quarter, Barlage set up Minyay for the Warriors' third tally, extending the margin to 3-0 which would hold as Martone added two more saves before the break to keep Regis within reach.
Eastern Connecticut pulled away in the third frame, with three different players finding the back of the cage to double the lead to 6-0 heading into the final 15 minutes.
The Pride answered in the fourth quarter, when after a sequence of penalty corners Costello converted in a crowded circle off a feed from Araujo to put Regis on the board, before Galligan connected with Miele-Defelice, who finished to cut the deficit to 6-2 with just over seven minutes to play. Despite the late push, ECSU held firm defensively the rest of the way to secure the 6-2 win.
