Women’s Soccer Drops Sunday Match at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. -- The Regis College women's soccer team traveled to Norton, Massachusetts on Sunday for a non-conference matchup against Wheaton College, where the Lyons defended their home field with a 2-0 victory over the Pride.

How it Happened:

Both sides generated early chances with a shot on goal apiece in the opening ten minutes, but Mazo and her counterpart turned them away to keep the match scoreless. The Lyons threatened again midway through the first half, but Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) came up with another stop while the Pride defense held strong to deny two ensuing corner kicks. Mazo continued to anchor the back line with another save, but the Lyons finally broke through when Emma James-Parson connected with Karina Contreras for the game's first goal, which would give the Lyons the 1-0 edge at the break.

Contreras returned to the scoresheet in the 56th minute, setting up Kate Wickenheisser to extend the Lyons' lead to two. Shortly after, The Pride pressed to cut into the deficit with looks from Julia Benvegnu (Watertown, Conn.) and Maeve Glavin (Norwood, Mass.), but the defense — along with Patricia Bandrup in net — turned them aside. Bandrup came up big again in the 67th minute turning away two shots including a header from Janet Amasa-Titus (Georgetown, Mass.)

The Pride continued to push offensively in the closing minutes, firing three more shots, but Bandrup stood tall to guide her team to the eventual 2-0 shutout over the Pride.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Daniela Mazo made her first start of the season in goal, recording eight saves in the effort.
