Regis Drops Home Opener to Wellesley, 3-0

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College Women's Volleyball opened its home slate against Wellesley College on Wednesday night, where the Blue earned a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) to improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Pride dropped to 1-3.

For Regis, Avery Mola (Cheshire, Conn.) led the offense with 7.5 points, recording four kills and three service aces. Beatriz Paulo (Newton, Mass.) contributed a team-high six kills, and Alexandra Rivera (Bristol, Conn.) handed out 13 assists. On the defensive end, Isabella Seccareccio (Medford, Mass.) paced the Pride with nine digs.

Wellesley was led by Caroline Meyer, who tallied a match-high 11 kills. Else Kunze-Hoeg directed the offense with 31 assists, while Noelle Winn and Kaija Kunze-Hoeg anchored the defense with 13 and 10 digs, respectively.

How It Happened:

The Blue jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, but back-to-back kills from Mola and Rivera closed the gap to 8-5. Wellesley responded with a 5-0 run to force a Regis timeout. After the regroup the Pride pulled within six thanks to a kill from Bella Karpicz (Wakefield, Mass.), but Wellesley regained control and closed out set one, 25-14.

In set two, Mola sparked the Pride with two aces and a kill during a 4-0 run that gave Regis a 10-5 advantage before the Blue regrouped with consecutive 3-0 spurts to even the frame at 12. Regis reclaimed the lead off a service error and later tied the set at 18 after a Paulo kill capped a 3-0 stretch. However, Wellesley responded with seven straight points to close the set, 25-18.

The third set was tightly contested, with the teams trading points until a trio of Pride errors gave Wellesley an 11-9 edge. Regis battled back, and a Grace Fabiano (Greenland, N.H.) kill helped spark a 3-0 run for a 16-14 lead. The Pride briefly went ahead again at 17-16, but the Blue delivered five unanswered points down the stretch to secure the 25-20 win and complete the sweep.
