Mariners Take Two from Pride in Connecticut
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Regis College Softball hit the road to Connecticut this afternoon for a GNAC doubleheader against Mitchell College, where the Mariners took both games — 9-1 and 6-2 — handing the Pride a pair of losses. With the results, Regis falls to 2-10 in GNAC play and 8-18 overall on the season.
Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.) went 3-for-7 on the day, collecting a run and an RBI, while Sydney Grund (Hamden, Conn.) went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI of her own. Both players notched a double and added a stolen base to their stat lines.
Game One
- Mitchell jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a three-run double to right-center.
- The Mariners tacked on four more runs an inning later, stringing together four hits — highlighted by a two-run triple — before adding another run in the third.
- Chloe Beland (Southborough, Mass.) led off the top of the fourth with a single up the middle, but the Mariners' defense responded by retiring the next three batters to leave her stranded.
- The Pride strung together three hits in the top of the fifth, with Grund's single driving in Abby Erikson (Worcester, Mass.) for their first run. However, it would be their only one, as the Mariners turned a double play just one batter later to end the inning — and the game — with a 9-1 victory.
Game Two
- The Mariners jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the third inning, using three doubles in the opening frames to fuel their early advantage.
- The Pride showed signs of life with a two-out rally in the third, as Grund doubled to left-center and was brought home by Burke for Regis' first run. However, a 1-3 groundout ended the threat and sent the game into the bottom half with the Mariners still in control.
- Sarah Cabral (Dartmouth, Mass.) added another run for the Pride in the sixth to cut the deficit to four, but the Mariners held strong, stranding two runners in the seventh to close out a 6-2 win and complete the series sweep over the Pride.
Inside the Numbers:
- Sydney Grund recorded her first career RBI in crimson and gold with an RBI single.
