Reigning National Champions Defeat Pride on Day Two of Brandeis Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. – The Regis College women's basketball team returned to Red Auerbach Arena for day two of the Brandeis Invitational, presented by the Park Lodge Hotel Group, where they faced the defending national champions, New York University (NYU). The Violets displayed their championship-caliber play throughout the contest, defeating the Pride 114-35. With the result, Regis opens the season at 0-2 following the opening weekend.
Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) led Regis with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting and collected seven rebounds, while Jillian Perry (Melrose, Mass.) added seven points in the effort.
NYU saw five players reach double figures, led by Caroline Peper, who hit seven three-pointers for all 21 of her points. Brooke Batchelor chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds to round out the victory for the Violets.
How it Happened
The Violets opened the game on a 14-2 run before Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) connected on a deep three-pointer to stop the bleeding. From there, NYU held Regis to just six more points in the quarter, taking a 33-10 lead after one.
In the second frame, the Violets continued to showcase their offensive firepower, knocking down seven three-pointers, three of them coming off the hands of Peper, to build a commanding 62-14 advantage heading into halftime.
The Pride found their rhythm in the third quarter, putting together their best offensive stretch of the game. With under two minutes remaining, an Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) three-pointer sparked a 9-2 run that Regis used to close out the frame on a positive note.
NYU finished the game in efficient fashion, shooting 50% from beyond the arc and 66.7% from the field in the fourth to cruise to the 114-35 victory over the Pride.
