Regis Falls to Springfield in Naismith Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield College took early control and defeated Regis College, 74-48, Wednesday evening in a non-conference men's basketball game at Blake Arena.
Russell Rau (Fitchburg, Mass.) led the Pride with 13 points and 12 rebounds to coin a double-double, while Gehrig Brynda (Deerfield, Mass.) finished with 10 points, four rebounds and one block. Aamyr Sullivan (Middletown, N.Y.) collected nine points with six rebounds and five assists while Jamir Harvey (Robbins, Ill.) contributed six points with two rebounds and an assist.
Although Regis made its first basket within the first minute of play, Springfield responded with a 16-4 scoring run, shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 3-for-3 from the three-point mark to lead 18-4. Springfield continued to apply pressure in the first half with a three-pointer from Curtiss Blishche followed by multiple free-throws from Hunter Matteson, Jarron Flynn, and Zander Robinson.
Regis gained momentum just before the halftime buzzer as Sullivan coined a three-pointer to close the deficit to 16 with Springfield in the lead at 40-24.
Regis held Springfield without a made basket for the first two minutes of play until Flynn of Springfield made way for a layup on a pass from Josh Hartley. Regis extended offensive output, going on a 9-4 run with Sullivan collecting four points while Brynda contributed three, bringing the Pride within nine points of Springfield at 46-37. Springfield responded with an 11-3 run to increase its advantage after a three-pointer from Josiah Evely.
Springfield continued to extend its offensive output finishing with a final of 74-48.
Regis (5-5) is scheduled to face Amherst in the second day of the Naismith Classic at Springfield College, beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2.
