Blue Jays Sneak Past Pride, 1-0

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The Regis College men's soccer team traveled to Connecticut on Tuesday to face the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), where a single goal proved to be the difference as the Blue Jays earned a 1-0 victory. The loss drops the Pride to 4-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play and 4-7-1 overall.

How it Happened

Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.) tested Blue Jays keeper Will Slayton early, but the goalie handled it cleanly to keep the Pride off the board just five minutes into play. Slayton came up with another save in the 22nd minute before Chris Alcon (Cartagena, Spain) was called upon in the 34th to preserve the scoreless tie. The Blue Jays threatened late in the half, but the Pride defense blocked back-to-back shots to send the match into the break still knotted at 0-0.

Twelve minutes into the second half, the Blue Jays broke through when Mario Milardo found the back of the net with help from Nate Gabriel and Emmanuel Ofori. McMahon and Haroun Mafhoum (Bellingham, Mass.) each forced Slayton to make key saves down the stretch, but he stood tall to protect the narrow lead. Both teams generated late opportunities—each earning multiple corner kicks in the final 15 minutes—but neither could convert, as the Blue Jays held on for the 1-0 victory on their home turf.

Inside the Numbers

  • Chris Alcon made two saves in the effort.
