Women's Hoop Pulls Away for Another GNAC Win
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Regis College maintained its offensive momentum throughout the night to defeat Norwich University, 78-76, Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at Andrews Gymnasium.
Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) shot 8-for-14 from the field as she led the Pride with 22 points, and eight rebounds, while hitting five three-pointers. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) contributed 19 points and five rebounds while shooting 11-for-17 from the free throw line. Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, two rebounds and two steals.
After Striggles scored the first three points of the game, the Cadets would score two points on a layup. Both teams battled, however the Pride continued to extend its output with four three-pointers and five baskets from the field to lead 18-16. Regis continued with a 9-6 run to close out the first quarter leading 27-20.
Regis opened the second quarter with the first three points from Zancan followed by a three-pointer from Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) after a layup from the Cadets. After nearly three minutes with each team unable to make a basket, Kiley O'Brien made way for a jumper from Lily Briggs to bring Norwich within 7 points at 35-28. Both teams would collect a majority of its points from free throws with Regis to lead 45-35 heading into halftime.
Maren McGinn started the third quarter with a layup just before Striggles broke through with a three-pointer on a pass from Marinelli, to extend the Pride lead at 48-37. Norwich eventually came within three points of the Pride thanks to a three-pointer and jumpshot from Siobhan O'Donnell followed by a layup from Sage MacAuley to close the deficit by three at 57-54. Regis closed out the third quarter with a layup to continue its lead into the fourth quarter at 59-54.
The Cadets started the fourth quarter continuing its offensive output to catchup to the Pride at 62 points, creating a clean slate. The Cadets would take a brief lead after hitting a three-pointer following a jumper from Zancan. The Pride would score the next four points to lead 68-65. The teams would tie again at 72 points, however the Pride would breakaway with three free throws and a three-pointer to take a lead and eventually close out with a 78-76 final.
Regis (4-11, 3-2 GNAC) will host University of Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Jan. 25, starting at 1:00 p.m. Norwich (6-9, 0-5 GNAC) will travel to face Dean College on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1:00 p.m.
