Women’s Volleyball Prevails Twice During Long Day
STANDISH, Maine – For Regis College, a day that started and ended with long bus trips included two matches that required more than the minimum three sets, but the Pride defeated both Rivier University, 3-1, and host Saint Joseph's College, 3-2, Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's volleyball tri-match at the Harold Alfond Center.
REGIS 3, RIVIER 1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-16, 25-13)
Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) notched her second double-double in as many matches as she led the Pride with 15 kills along with 10 digs, plus she hit .500 in the match. Avery Mola (Cheshire, Conn.) also earned a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs as well as a team-high five service aces. Alexandra Rivera (Bristol, Conn.) notched her first career double-double with 33 assists and a season-high 11 digs, Grace Fabiano (Greenland, N.H.) collected nine kills and three total blocks, and Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage and three blocks.
The Pride held a 24-21 lead in the opening set after consecutive service aces by Kate Julian (Mendon, Mass.), but Rivier rattled off five straight points to take the first set, led by two service aces from Hannah Raab and a set-clinching kill from Brynn Roche.
After the Raiders took a 5-4 lead in the second set on back-to-back service aces by Ali Rivera, the Pride scored the next four points to retake the lead at 8-5. Rivier later closed to within one point at 15-14 on a kill by Callie Nanos, but Regis closed out the set with a 10-3 scoring run, led by three kills from Tenorio and two kills from Montigny.
Regis scored six unanswered points early in the third set to open a 7-2 advantage and extended that lead to as much as 12 points at 22-10 after kills by Bella Karpicz (Berkley, Mass.) and Fabiano. The Raiders put together a quick 5-0 run, led by two kills from Lily Sills, but the Pride responded with three of the next four points to close out the set, capped by a service ace from Anna Abouzeid (Taunton, Mass.) and a kill from Mola.
Tenorio notched consecutive service aces as the Pride scored the first three points of the fourth set, but Rivier earned the next five points and held a 7-5 lead after a kill by Roche. Paced by Mola with two kills and three service aces, Regis scored the next eight points to pull ahead, 13-7, and then the Pride would finish the set and the match with a 6-1 scoring run, punctuated by kills from Fabiano and Mola.
Rivier (11-13, 6-5 GNAC) was led by Sills and Nanos with six kills apiece, while Raab finished with three service aces and a team-high 11 defensive digs.
REGIS 3, SAINT JOSEPH'S COLLEGE 2 (25-17, 18-25, 25-20, 10-25, 15-9)
Tenorio once again led the Pride with 12 kills, 11 digs, and three service aces, while Fabiano finished with 10 kills. Rivera dished out 24 assists to go along with eight digs, Mola also earned 11 digs, and Montigny paced the team at the net with five solo blocks.
Fabiano collected two kills as Regis scored the first four points of the match, but the Monks eventually pulled ahead, 8-7, on a solo block by Regan Noonan. The Pride responded with a 10-3 scoring run as they held onto their advantage during the rest of the set, culminating with the final three points of the opening set on two Monk attack errors and a kill by Fabiano.
Saint Joseph's College (10-14, 6-3 GNAC) scored nine unanswered points in the second set, including consecutive service aces by Hanna Webster, to open a 22-14 advantage. Tenorio notched two kills as the Pride closed to within four points, but the Monks scored the final three points of the second set thanks in part to kills by Kylie Giakoumis and Greta Mackintosh.
Thanks in part to two service aces by Ayla Albers (San Diego, Calif.), Regis opened the third set by scoring six of the first seven points. Later in the set, back-to-back service aces by Larisa Comolli helped the Monks close their deficit to two points, but the Pride responded with a 5-2 scoring run to close the set, led by Tenorio with three kills.
After the Monks went on a 15-3 scoring run to win the fourth set, Regis pulled ahead in the deciding fifth set, 6-4, on a kill and a service ace from Tenorio. Saint Joseph's College stayed within two points at 11-9 on a kill by Mackintosh, but the Pride clinched the set and the match with four straight points, all on Monk errors.
Victoria Brones led the Monks with 10 kills, plus she collected nine digs, while Noonan finished with eight kills, a .389 hitting percentage, and four total blocks. Jessica Christman enjoyed a solid match in several areas with six assists, three service aces, and a team-high 12 defensive digs.
Regis (19-6, 11-2 GNAC) steps out of conference for a match against Western New England Tuesday, Oct. 29, starting at 6 p.m. It is the annual Dig Pink match that will once again benefit the Ellie Fund.
